The
ground floor has a lounge bar, separate lounge, and dinning rooms,
all tastefully decorated, and furnished with antiques. Upstairs,
the well proportioned, comfortable bedrooms with their super king
sized beds (or twin if preferred) and quality en suite facilities
offer the perfect resting place. There is parking in the grounds
to the front of the house, whilst the large walled garden to the
rear, remains a secluded haven.
Rudi,
who qualified as a chef on the continent before coming to England,
has an excellent reputation for his food which is expertly prepared
and cooked in the traditional manner, using only the best, freshest,
local produce. To accompany dinner there is a carefully selected
list of over forty wines to choose from, and a well stocked bar.
This
corner of Cumbria is steeped in history from Roman times to the
heyday of the 19th century when Maryports' maritime connections
were famed the world over. The Solway Coast, rich in wild flowers
and butterflies is a popular haunt for bird watchers and those preferring
flat walks. For golf lovers, the Maryport golf course is nearby
and the championship course at Silloth is only twenty minutes drive.
The Retreat is convenient for visiting the Lake District being only
seven miles from Cockermouth, and twenty miles from Keswick. To
the north, the historical city of Carlisle, on the borders of Scotland
and Northumbria is only thirty minutes drive away.
